Praise God for his faithfulness and the favor that He shared with us throughout the 2010 camping season! The camp season was kicked off with Camp Pioneer’s first annual “Unity in the Community” picnic. The picnic, held on Sunday, May 30, 2010 hosted more than 200 alumni, friends, and neighbors of Camp Pioneer. The sun beamed and day was filled with camp activities such as: basketball, football, swimming, boating, and the zip line. Old campers were reunited and new friendships were formed as visitors fellowshipped under the shade trees, toured the campus, and enjoyed food from the grill. The “Green Team”, which included many volunteers as well as the 2010 summer staff, were on hand to make sure that everything progressed smoothly throughout the day! The picnic proved to be very instrumental as it catapulted us into our first week of camp.

The theme for the summer of 2010 was, “Living Like I Am HIS,” and the theme verse was Ephesians 5:1, “Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do because you are his dear children.”NIV The individual themes for each day challenged different areas in our own lives. Both staff and campers were charged to love, speak, forgive, obey, worship, and live like we belong to God.

The Lord blessed us with twelve dynamic counselors who willingly embraced the challenge to not only live like they were God’s, but to serve like they were his. Aaron Bingham, Matthias Castilla, Nicole Conley, J.T. Griffith, Starlencia Hoye, Marilyn Johnson, Lyle Lee, Tiara Lee, Willie Mosely, Alexandria Provall, NaKisha Snell, and Wardell Turner, Jr. comprised one of the greatest, multi-talented, servant-spirited, and energetic counseling staffs to ever serve Camp Pioneer and we praise God for their faithfulness.

Each week of camp had its own theme. Mrs. Donna McNair and a team of volunteers transformed the campus each week with creative decorations. During Safari Week(1), campers trekked across the campus on a Safari Hunt and created collages which they shared with their families during the closeout program. They were also able to experience and learn from The Conservation Center and the Zoomobile from the Jackson Zoo. Week 2, Sports Week, was fantastic as Coach Keenon Sanders (Houston,TX) spent the week conducting training sessions that would help improve speed, agility, and overall athletic ability. Computer and Discovery Week (3) sizzled with excitement as Mr. Robert Swilley taught computer classes and each camper created their own web page, and Mrs. Barbara Sanders sought to inspire the campers to have a “Green Thumb” by reviving the camp garden! Drama and Music Week (4) was phenomenal. The counselors and campers built their own puppets as well as created and performed their own puppet skits. Also, the campers were able to attend music classes conducted by Mrs. Gloria Brown (Chicago, IL). In their music classes, the campers learned numerous songs as well as how to play the bells in the Bell Choir. The parents were amazed with the campers performances during the closeout program, and so were we!

Our Teen Week Extravaganza was just as thrilling as it always is! In addition to the traditional activities, the campers were able to participate in College Day. Dr. D’Andrea Campbell, Ms. Maegan Mitchell, Ms. Brittney Turner, and Mr. Michael Morris and many of our counselors and staff members were on hand to represent their respective colleges and to provide insight and tips of things that the campers should be doing to prepare for college. We also had the return of our Set Apart sessions. The males were challenged by Mr. John Sanders and Eld. Jarvis Ward to stand apart from the crowd and to represent God, while the females were enlightened by Mrs. Barbara Sanders and Mrs. Louise Coleman of the importance of representing Christ as young ladies in today’s society. The campers and staff were also able to enjoy the traditional Staff vs. Campers volleyball, kickball, and basketball games! Each game was a nail biter to the very end! Teen Week culminated with a special candlelight dinner on Friday night were campers and staff were allowed to have words of expression. We praise God for many of the testimonies of how so many were challenged, changed and encouraged to return home and “Live Like they are HIS!”

Each week of camp was a thrilling adventure with cookouts, mission minutes, swimming, challenge course activities, zip line, and so much more! God placed extraordinary people in place to serve wholeheartedly and enthusiastically throughout the entire summer. Mr. Tony Granger and Mr. Justin Sanders (Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director) were a dynamic duo as they served tirelessly and diligently to assure that every single aspect of camp, from the grounds and facilities to the people and equipment, was up to standard and ready to operate at all times. We are so thankful for their leadership and their commitment to serve Christ through this ministry. Mrs. Barbara Sanders was truly instrumental in the success of the 2010 summer program as she used her creative enthusiasm to add spice to the program. Praise God for our maintenance staff, (Kaleb Bingham, Dwayne Hickman, Kelvin Snell, and Mack Stewart). The camp grounds and facilities were up to standard from the beginning to the end of the camping season. We also appreciate our Campfire Coordinator, Ms. D. Nichole Kennebrew, whose intense love for Christ and passion for his purpose kept campfires both engaging and exciting! Also, we are thankful for our Recreational Director, Min. Willie Barber, who brought exciting games and challenges (especially the triathlon) throughout the summer to physically engage the campers while still having fun! We also appreciate our lifeguards, (Jenae, Kari, Austin, Daniel, and David) for enduring the heat so that our campers could cool off and have a good time in the pool and on the lakefront in the boats. We greatly appreciate Mrs. Paula Granger as she took on leadership and managed the kitchen crew (Mr. Holloway, Mrs. Candace, Reuben, Val, Rachel, Diondria, Simeon, and Laperia) as they provided fantastic service and delicious meals. This summer would not have been possible without the people who keep the camp running, from the inside- out, the Administrative Office Staff- Dr. Maurice Bingham, Mrs. Annie Bingham, Mrs. Amanda Carson, Ms. Lisa Willis, Ms. Jasmine Scott, and Ms. Tamar Bingham- We definitely could not have done this without you! You all are amazing!

We are also thankful for our campfire speakers and Bible class teachers across the summer: Mr. Henry Murphey, Mr. Gatlin, Mr. Mozelle Little, Mr. Kevin Patterson, Mr. Arlandis Powell, Mr. Tony Yarber, Mr. Matthew Larry, Mr. Willie Barber, Mr. John Sanders, Mrs. Barbara Sanders, Mrs. Lillian Brown, Mrs. Myah Lane, Mr. Ricardo Brown, Mr. Justin Sanders, and Mr. Tony Granger. We appreciate the messages that were shared as they challenged the campers as well as the staff to examine our lives and to be certain that we are living a life that affirms our relationship with Christ.

All praise and honor belong to God as we celebrate the success of Camp Pioneer 2010. He allowed us to serve him in the beauty of his majestic creation, and as we focused on ministering to others, he ministered to us as well. Each of us received the charge, as we now challenge you, to examine every aspect of our lives and be able to say, without hesitation, ” I am LIVING LIKE I AM HIS!”

General Policies

The age range for campers is 6 years old to 18 years old

Campers must be 6 years old upon arrival for overnight camp

Arrival time: Each camping week begins with Monday morning registration from 8:00am – 9:00am. The week will conclude a 6:00pm Friday with a special recognition/awards program for campers and their parents

So that your child will enjoy the maximum benefit of the program, we discourage request for pickup before Friday evening. No refunds will be given for early departures

Having adequate information on our campers is vital to us for dealing with problems that may arise. Tetanus shot information is very important. Those with infectious conditions should not attend. Persons wishing to attend who have a history of physical disabilities must indicate these on the application. Approval to attend must be granted by Camp Administrators prior to arrival at camp.
